Chinese Unglazed Pottery Lokapala Guardian Figure

Tang dynasty

Description

Finely modeled in the full round with dramatic pose with arm raised and standing upon a demon.  The figure is dressed in armor and helmet decorated with a bird; and the epaulets, with dragon heads. Retaining vestiges of original slip decoration.

A group of similar Lokapala figures were found in Shensi province and published in Wen Wu, 1958, Nos. 151-4.
