Chinese Carved Stone Figure of a Scholar or Lohan

LIAO DYNASTY, 916-1125

Description

Posed seated with legs crossed and head looking towards the viewer, with naturalistic features. Dressed in a robe with sleeves hanging from his arms, and loose from his legs, similar to Khitan types seen in murals in Liao period tombs.

Height: 21 ¼ inches (54 cm.)

Ex: Private American Collection (acquired from Bernstein and Co., San Francisco in 1998).


A very similar figure was in the Curtis Collection with a Song inscription dating to 963. Another two larger sized examples are in the Shaanxi History Museum, Xian.
