The famed Hatcher Collection, was a sea wreck recovered from the South China Sea in the 1980s and sold in Amsterdam at Christie’s on March 14, 1984. The quantity and quality of the porcelains was remarkable, and caused a collecting trend of these particular types. Much was learned from these pieces about the 17th century porcelain market that was otherwise not known at the time. Their dramatic history of having been retrieved from under the sea after 340 years added to their mystique.
