Posed standing on a reed crossing a river, with shoe hanging from his shoulder.Bodhidharma was a 6th century Indian Buddhist monk credited with bringing Buddhism to China.

Figures of Bodhidharma are rare in Kangxi porcelain.An almost identical example from the Henry Hirsch Collection is illustrated in Chinese Porcelain and Hard Stones by Gorer Blacker, 1911, Vol. I, Pl. 94.
