Chinese Cizhou Glazed Figure of Budai

Ming dynasty

Description

Posed in a position of "royal ease" and leaning against a sack.  His face, with friendly expression.  Budai was the Buddha of the future and is often depicted near the entrance of
temples to greet visitors. He was a representaiton of happiness, contentment, wisdom, and abundance. 
A rare model to find in cizhou ware.
Ming dynasty, ca: 15th/ 16th century
With fitted wood base.
Height with base: 7 5/8 inches
