Chinese Unglazed Pottery Figure of a Semitic Trader

Tang dynasty

Finely modeled in the full round.  The bearded figure is posed in mid-step, bent at the waist, and holding a large pack.  He is dressed in a long coat.  His features depict a Middle Eastern figure from the Silk Road- and possibly a Jewish merchants.  The Tang dynasty was a very cosmopolitan period in China’s history.  Non-Asian foreigners were exotic figures in China at that time and were included in the ceramic figures created to capture the different aspects of life and people in the cities and at the Court.
